The subject
Leonardo da Vinci's Portrait of a Musician, painted around 1490, depicts a young man in a three-quarter position, holding a sheet of music in his hand. The subject's face, detailed and realistic, stands out from the other elements of the work, such as the red hat and tunic, which appear to have been added later or by another artist. The musician's gaze is directed towards something outside the viewer's field of vision, giving the scene an aura of mystery. The portrait, exhibited at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, is considered a significant example of Leonardo's skill in the psychological representation of his subjects. Although some believe that the musician portrayed is Franchino Gaffurio, the choirmaster of the Milan Cathedral, the identity of the man remains uncertain. Furthermore, the work has been largely restored, and some art historians believe that Leonardo left it unfinished.
