The artwork
A luminous eighteenth-century view of the Warwick Castle, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there are the castle gardens, which extend at the foot of the walls, populated by a few strolling people. Further in the background there is the Anglo-Saxon-style castle, with its high crenellated walls. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon, but it's a beautiful day.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1752. There is another variant of this work created by Canaletto. The painting is exhibited at the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.
