The artwork
The Madonna of Humility by Masaccio depicts the Virgin seated on the ground with the Child, following an iconography that emphasizes modesty and simplicity. Mary supports her Son with a natural and affectionate gesture, while the Child appears solid and realistic, far removed from Gothic idealization.
The use of light and chiaroscuro gives volume and physical presence to the figures, highlighting their materiality. The sober composition and the focus on the mother-and-child relationship express the humanization of the sacred typical of the Early Renaissance, making the scene intimate and profoundly human.
