The work
Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, created around 1490, is a pen and ink drawing on paper, measuring 34.4 × 24.5 cm. It is preserved in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, but is rarely exhibited for conservation reasons.
This work is an iconic representation of the ideal proportions of the human body, harmoniously inserted within a circle and a square, symbols of the divine and the earthly respectively. The Vitruvian Man reflects the Renaissance interest in the harmony, order and perfection of the human body, inspired by the works of the Roman architect Vitruvius.
The drawing is accompanied by explanatory texts that illustrate the proportions of the human body in geometric terms, inspired by a passage from Vitruvius. Leonardo, however, does not limit himself to reproducing Vitruvius' ideas, but proposes his own interpretation based on direct observations, offering an alternative to the classical proportional scheme.
