The artwork
Original and luminous eighteenth-century representation of a majestic architectural staircase, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the magnificent staircase, with groups of nobles ascending it. Two magnificent equestrian statues are located on the sides of the staircase at the top. Further in the background the magnificent palace is depicted, arranged symmetrically, with a new entrance staircase. On the roof of the palace there's a balustrade with beautiful statues that run the entire perimeter of the building. Canaletto illuminates the left façade of the palace with the bright light of the morning sun.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection. There is another variant of this work created by Canaletto.
