Charles-Joseph Minard's 1860 map represents, in figurative form, the approximate tonnage of wines and spirits circulating in France in 1857 via waterways and railways. The colored bands follow rivers, canals, and railway lines, with their thickness proportional to the volumes transported, in Minard's typical graphic language. Paris, located in the center, appears as the main convergence point for traffic, connected to the ports of Bordeaux, Nantes, Marseille, Lyon, Rouen, and Strasbourg, testifying to the national economic importance of wine and spirits trade in Second Empire France. The map, a color lithograph, is today considered a pioneering example of statistical-cartographic visualization applied to economic history.
