The work
Artemisia Gentileschi created several versions of the work "Susanna and the Elders", inspired by the biblical episode narrated in the Book of Daniel. This story tells of Susanna, a chaste woman surprised in the bathroom by two elderly men who offer her sexual blackmail. Gentileschi's representation stands out for its realistic approach and the deep emotional expression of the characters.
The oldest version, dated 1610 and preserved in Pommersfelden, Germany, is the first work signed and dated by Gentileschi. It is characterized by intense drama and a marked use of chiaroscuro, with Susanna portrayed in a tight pose that demonstrates the painter's virtuosity. The work highlights Susanna's psychological discomfort, oppressed by the threatening presence of the two old men.
