Anatomical studies of a male shoulder 1509-10
Pen and ink on paper, 292 x 198 mm
Royal Library, Windsor
Leonardo da Vinci, a master of the Renaissance era, carried out a detailed study of the superficial anatomy of the shoulder and neck, focusing in particular on the muscles of these areas. This work, dating from around 1510-11, is a testament to da Vinci's intense interest in human anatomy and his skill in depicting it. The piece, which measures 29.2 x 19.8 cm, is part of the Royal Collection and has a rich history. It was initially bequeathed to Francesco Melzi, subsequently acquired by Pompeo Leoni around 1582-90, and finally became part of the Royal Collection by 1690.
This drawing is not only an artistic feat, but also a scientific exploration, showcasing da Vinci's meticulous study of human anatomy. It was featured in the exhibition "Leonardo da Vinci: The Mechanics of Man" at the Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse. This exhibition used modern medical technology to delve deeper into Leonardo's anatomical research, bridging the gap between Renaissance art and contemporary medical science.
