The work
The Roman Forum, also known by its Latin name Forum Romanum, is a rectangular forum (piazza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings in the center of the city of Rome. The citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a market place, as Forum Magnum, or simply Forum. For centuries the Forum was the center of daily life in Rome: home to processions and triumphal moments; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiator bouts; and the core of commercial affairs.
Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The beating heart of ancient Rome, it has been defined as the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all of history. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and the Capitoline Hill, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations that attract 4.5 million or more tourists a year. Many of the ancient city's oldest and most important structures were located on or near the Forum. The first sanctuaries and temples of the Roman kingdom were located at the south-eastern end. These included the ancient former royal residence, the Regia (8th century BC), and the Temple of Vesta (7th century BC), as well as the surrounding complex of the Vestals, all rebuilt after the rise of imperial Rome.
