The work
The protagonists of this vision are the ruins of the Forum of Nerva, the so-called Colonnacce of the Temple of Minerva, which still today, at the Imperial Forums, support a band with a bas-relief frieze and the statue of the goddess. The structure stands like a mysterious semi-submerged wreck of waned grandeur, which has now become the home of artisans. With clever visual expedients, Piranesi transforms it into a perfect theatrical backdrop that breaks out, on the right, into the narrow perspective of a street, an axis in the urban environment, subsequently gutted by urban demolition and at the end of which the Colosseum can be glimpsed.
