Original and rare 18th-century view of Rome, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. We are near a city gate, but the arch was painted by Canaletto in detail and close-up, so it is impossible to determine which arch it is. At the foot of the arch there are soldiers in period uniforms, notables, and other people. Inside the arch, details of a Roman neighborhood can be seen.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1742.
