The subject
The portrait of Ginevra de' Benci , painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1474 and 1478, represents a young Florentine aristocrat surrounded by a thick background of juniper, a symbol of feminine virtue in the Renaissance. The setting is sober and Ginevra's face appears austere and beautiful, but detached, without a hint of a smile, accentuating her thoughtful nature. The portrait, exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, is one of the few paintings by Leonardo in the United States and represents one of the first testimonies of the evolution of his style, particularly in the realistic rendering of details, such as the young woman's delicate complexion and the complexity of her clothing.
