The subject

The portrait of Ginevra de' Benci , painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1474 and 1478, represents a young Florentine aristocrat surrounded by a thick background of juniper, a symbol of feminine virtue in the Renaissance. The setting is sober and Ginevra's face appears austere and beautiful, but detached, without a hint of a smile, accentuating her thoughtful nature.
