The work
The fresco "Wounded Aeneas" is a Roman work of art from the 1st century AD, found in the House of Sirico in Pompeii and currently preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The work depicts a scene from the XII book of Virgil's Aeneid: Aeneas, wounded in the thigh during the battle against the Rutuli, is treated by the physician Iapyx. In the fresco, Aeneas is standing while Iapyx, kneeling, extracts the arrow from his leg. On the left, the goddess Venus, mother of Aeneas, watches the scene with concern, while the young Ascanius, son of Aeneas, stands next to his father. On the right side, two armed warriors witness the scene. This fresco testifies to the spread of the Virgilian myth in ancient Pompeii and offers an insight into the knowledge of medical practices of the time.
