In this scene we are faced with a moment of joy and wonder. Saint Anna, who, given her advanced age, despaired of being able to conceive a child, became pregnant by God's will. And here, Giotto portrays the birth of her daughter, Mary . They are three distinct scenes, brought together in a single image. The first moments after giving birth , when the women entrust the newborn Mary to Anna's arms, while another handmaid offers the new mother a piece of bread, to make up for the effort of giving birth. Immediately below, the first bath , done with a little clean water and humble cloths. Meanwhile, at the door, a woman delivers some good luck gifts . Perhaps it is the wife of Scrovegni, the client of the entire work. An image set in Giotto's typical architecture, which manages to convey a sense of spatiality and dynamism to the scene.
