Giotto moved away from the traditional representation of history. Jesus is in a rocky landscape with an overhang covered by a wooden roof for the Birth of Jesus . According to the Byzantine iconographic tradition, Mary is reclining, but the disposition of the mother's body was a novelty in art. Mary leans over little Jesus, bringing her face closer to the child. Giotto repeated a similar scene in a later fresco titled Lamentation of Christ . In the left foreground the donkey has been painted in a short perspective. Next to him, Giuseppe is immersed in a dream, and his silhouette recalls Gioacchino in Gioacchino's dream . On the right, two shepherds listen to the words of an angel who announces the coming of the Messiah to the world:

The above angels were placed on top of the stable roof. In this way, Giotto presented two rows on a fresco.
