"Minister Toru," from the renowned series of Chinese and Japanese poems reflected in the life of Katsushika Hokusai, is a refined synthesis of image and Eastern literary culture. This print, produced as a reproduction on Amalfi paper, captures the elegance and symbolic depth typical of ukiyo-e, offering an authentic glimpse into the aesthetics and sensibility of Edo Japan.
The scene alludes to a poem by Toru that evokes boats floating in moonlight, shadowed by pines, translating the aristocratic ideal of contemplation and harmony with nature into an image. The work belongs to the series “A True Mirror of Chinese and Japanese Poetry,” in which Hokusai visually interprets famous Sino-Japanese compositions, blending landscape, literature, and historical memory.
