The painting is by Anthony van Dyck, a Flemish master active in major European courts in the first half of the 17th century. Created around 1634, during the painter's stay in Brussels, it portrays Margaret of Lorraine, the young Duchess of Orléans, fleeing with her husband Gaston of France after their clandestine and politically controversial marriage. Van Dyck translates this delicate moment of her life into an image of sovereign composure: the full-length figure, the rich black fabric gown that sweeps to the floor, the pristine lace and the string of pearls framing her face create an aura of refined nobility, while the red drapery in the background introduces a tone of solemn Baroque theatricality.
The artist enhances the duchess's personality through a stable yet not rigid pose, the slight turn of her torso, and her direct but reserved gaze, which suggest self-control and an awareness of her rank despite the turbulent events. The delicate gesture with which she holds a flower between her fingers, enhanced by the sheen of the silks and the play of light on the folds of her dress, makes the portrait particularly attractive to collectors: an icon of 17th-century aristocratic elegance, signed by one of Europe's most celebrated portraitists and now preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
