The frescoed map in the Sala del Mappamondo (Room of the World Map) of Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola (Lazio) is a large wall planisphere created around 1574-75, attributed to Giovanni de’ Vecchi and his workshop. It depicts Europe according to late Renaissance geographical knowledge, with toponyms in Latin and a strong emphasis on the Mediterranean regions, the heart of Farnese power. The work, part of a cycle featuring maps of the four continents, celebrates the global political and cultural horizon of the Farnese family, translating information from contemporary nautical charts and geographical texts into updated images. The pictorial rendition, rich in colors and orographic details, combines cartographic precision with Mannerist decorative taste.
