The "Map of the Coast and Islands of the Eastern Mediterranean" is a Renaissance nautical chart attributed to the Sicilian cartographer Jacopo Russo, active in Messina in the first half of the 16th century. Made on parchment and included in the manuscript known as "Geographic Maps," it precisely depicts coasts, ports, and islands from the Aegean Sea to the Levant, with a dense network of rhumb lines typical of Mediterranean portolans. Coats of arms, flags, and prospective views of cities highlight the political and commercial interests of the maritime powers of the time, while the rich decoration with compass roses and boats reflects both the practical and prestigious function of this navigation instrument.

Feel history at your fingertips

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today using ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
