The work
Raphael's "Sistine Madonna", painted between 1513 and 1514, is a masterpiece that expresses the artist's mastery of composition and use of color. The Virgin Mary, standing on a cloud, holds the Baby Jesus in her arms and looks towards the faithful with a melancholy look. On the sides, San Sisto and Santa Barbara witness the scene, while two little angels, which have become iconic, are depicted on the lower edge of the painting. The painting, originally commissioned for the convent of San Sisto in Piacenza, is today preserved at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
The work stands out for its compositional harmony, the dynamics of the saints' attitudes and the symbolic use of clouds, which emphasize the celestial character of the vision. The colors are predominantly cold, but with warm contrasts in the drapery and figures, which help to create an effect of depth and brightness. The "Sistine Madonna" is considered an emblem of the artistic perfection of the Renaissance.
