The work
Raphael's "Madonna di Foligno", painted between 1511 and 1512, is a work commissioned by Sigismondo de' Conti to thank the Virgin Mary for the protection received during a bombing during which Sigismondo was miraculously saved by a bullet fire. The composition shows the Madonna and Child on a cloud, with a rainbow and a fiery sphere in the background symbolizing the miracle. On the right, Saint John the Baptist points to the Virgin, while Saint Francis of Assisi is depicted in prayer. Saint Jerome, with the lion, is next to the kneeling Sigismondo de' Conti. In the center, an angel looks towards the Madonna with a double-handled table, a symbolic element of early Christian iconography. Longhi underlines the influence of Michelangelo and Leonardo in the powerful figures of the saints and in the atmospheric rendering of the landscape.
