The work
Raphael's Madonna dell'Impannata, created in 1514, takes its name from the cloth that covers the window behind the sacred figures, protagonists of the scene. The window closed with a cloth instead of glass was in fact called "impannata" and symbolizes the domestic life and simplicity of the Holy Family: Raphael once again combines intimacy with the sacred.
What is striking is the arrangement of the characters and their movement towards the Madonna, here dressed in blue, a symbol of purity and divinity. St. John the Baptist as a child points to the Child Jesus - of whom he is a precursor - as if to recognize his sacredness; while Saint Elizabeth and Saint Magdalene represent, respectively, the miraculous and mercy: one for her miraculous motherhood, the other for her path of repentance and redemption, and for her profound love for Christ.
The luminous plasticity of the Child Jesus almost seems to emerge from the painting, so vivid and realistic are his joyful childish movements, and contrasts with the seraphic and statuesque figure of the Madonna next to him. The combination conveys both a feeling of mysticism and the familiar sensation of witnessing a graceful scene of everyday life.
