The work
The "Madonna of the Tower" or "Mackintosh Madonna" was created by Raphael in 1509. The painting depicts the Madonna and Child, with a serene landscape in the background where a tower can be glimpsed, hence the name of the work. The sweetness and serenity expressed in the faces of the Madonna and Child embody the ideal of Renaissance beauty. The composition is balanced, with a skilful use of perspective that guides the observer's eye towards the central figure of the Madonna. Vasari praises the delicacy of the colors and the precision of the details, underlining Raphael's ability to harmoniously blend figure and landscape. Berenson and Longhi appreciate the psychological depth and humanity of the figures, highlighting Leonardo's influence in soft shades and chiaroscuro. Morelli, on the other hand, highlights the purity of the lines and the refinement of the composition.
