The work
The "Madonna of the Goldfinch" is a painting by Raffaello Sanzio, created during his stay in Florence between 1504 and 1508. Commissioned for the wedding of Lorenzo Nasi and Sandra di Matteo Canigiani in 1506, the work suffered significant damage in 1547 due to a landslide, but was restored and registered in the collection of Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici in 1646-47. It is currently located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The painting exudes a divine serenity and timeless sweetness. The Virgin, with a loving and protective gaze, observes the two children, Jesus and Saint John the Baptist, who play with a goldfinch, symbol of the future Passion of Christ. The enveloping light and vibrant colors create an atmosphere of pure harmony and grace. This painting captures the essence of maternal sacredness and the omen of sacrifice, deeply touching the soul of those who contemplate it.
Raphael uses a pyramidal composition, influenced by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, and aerial perspective to create depth and harmony between the figures and the landscape. The figures, modeled with softness and naturalness, express an ideal beauty and a vital dynamic thanks to the intense exchanges of glances and gestures.
The painting, measuring 113 x 88 cm, was created with oil colors applied with overlapping glazes. The children's figures are painted with pink-brown skin tones, while the Madonna has a light complexion and almost blond hair. The landscape, with green meadows and blue hills, is illuminated by a diffused light that softens the shadows and gives a serene atmosphere to the scene.
The "Madonna of the Goldfinch" is a perfect example of Raphael's ability to create balanced and harmonious compositions, which influenced generations of artists up until the 19th century.
