The work

Raphael's "Madonna dei Carnations" is a masterpiece that conveys profound serenity and intimate devotion. The scene is set in a shady room, where Mary and Baby Jesus share a moment of tender contemplation. Mary, with her gray dress with puffed sleeves and the blue cloak that covers only her legs, holds little Jesus in her lap, who, naked, is curiously observing the pink-red carnations in his hands, which his mother gave him as soon as I bring. Carnations, symbol of the Passion, that is, of the blood that Jesus will shed on the cross, also represent the mystical marriage between Christ and the Church, embodied by Mary.

The composition is enriched by symbolic details such as the canopy bed, which alludes to Mary's virginity, and the window which reveals a rural landscape with ancient ruins, a symbol of the transience of the earthly world compared to the purity and eternity of the divine.

The work, created between 1506 and 1507, when Raphael was 23-24, reflects the mastery of his youth, already famous for his ability to harmonize the human figure with the surrounding environment. The figures of the Virgin and Child emerge forcefully from the shadows, creating a contrast that accentuates their sacredness and their humanity at the same time. The small rectangle of landscape visible from the window adds further depth, inviting the viewer to contemplate beyond the domestic scene.

The intimacy of the representation and Raphael's technical perfection have made this Madonna an iconographic model, widely copied and reproduced over time. His influence endured for centuries, testifying to the ideal of beauty and grace that Raphael's art embodied.

The "Madonna dei Carnation" is not only a work of private devotion, but a symbol of the eternal bond between the divine and the human, represented with a beauty that has fascinated generations of artists and faithful. The panel, with its contained dimensions ( 27.9 in height and 22.4 in width) and the glazed oil colours, expresses a perfect balance, a testimony to the "ideal beauty" that Raphael knew how to capture like few others.
