The work is part of Giotto's so-called Padua classicism, which in the painter's artistic development represents the moment in which his language appears most idealized and solemn. A learned friar from the Umiliati convent probably had to advise the great artist so that he could fully express the various theological implications addressed in the work. The Madonna's white robe, for example, which alludes to her virginity, is relatively unusual in Florentine painting, but is significantly present in the Scrovegni frescoes.
