The symbol
In 36 BC, the Tenth Legion fought under Octavian against Sextus Pompey at the Battle of Naulochus, where it earned the massimon Fretensis.
The name refers to the fact that the battle took place near the sea of the Strait of Messina (Fretum Siculum).
In 31 BC he fought in the battle of Actium against Mark Antony. The legion managed to board the enemy ships which were hooked by means of a remotely launched iron grappling hook, which allowed the ships to be captured and dragged.
Its vital role in this battle is probably why the legion also used a trireme as one of its symbols. Actium marked the end of the civil war and the rise to power of Octavian, who a few years later was proclaimed Augustus.
