The symbol

Originally called "Pia" for its loyalty to the Roman state, the legion was created together with the III Italica by the emperor Marcus Aurelius. There is good evidence to show that both legions were raised in 165 AD. The main theater of the legion's operations was the Roman province of Noricum, on the southern edge of the Danube, where Germanic raids were frequent. In 180 AD, the II Italica was instead stationed in Lauriacum, modern Lorch.
