The subject
The work was located in Florence in the house of the merchant Matteo Botti, where Giorgio Vasari, Vincenzo Borghini and Bocchi saw it. In 1619 it reached the Medici collection as a bequest from the last heir of the Botti family. The indicative date of around 1516 corresponds to the dating signed by the Palatine Gallery which preserves the work. However, the time range on which the scholars' discussions focus is broader since it is located between 1512 and 1518, that is to say after the Sistine Madonna and Dorotea by Sebastiano del Piombo and before the Fornarina.
