The subject
Lady with an Ermine, painted by Leonardo da Vinci between 1489 and 1490, is a portrait of Cecilia Gallerani, the young lover of Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. In this masterpiece, Leonardo breaks with the portraiture tradition of the time, depicting Cecilia in three-quarters rather than in profile, creating a sense of movement and dynamism. The ermine that the lady holds in her arms has a strong symbolic meaning: associated with purity and moderation, but also a possible reference to Cecilia's surname and her relationship with Ludovico. The painting, now preserved in the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow, is one of the finest examples of Leonardo's ability to blend technique, innovation and symbolism, making this portrait not only a work of aesthetic beauty, but also a testimony to Renaissance court life.
