The subject
The portrait of La Belle Ferronnière, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and preserved in the Louvre, depicts a woman whose enigmatic and mysterious face has raised many hypotheses about her identity. The lady, with a stern look and a characteristic jeweled chain on her forehead, could be Beatrice d'Este, wife of Ludovico Sforza, although in the past it was thought to be Lucrezia Crivelli, one of his lovers. The work has been the subject of much debate, both for the identity of the subject and for the authorship of the painting itself, with some historians attributing it to Bernardino de' Conti. Despite its complex history, "La Belle Ferronnière" remains one of the most famous female portraits of the Renaissance.
