This map belongs to one of the famous portolan atlases created by the Genoese cartographer Battista Agnese in Venice in 1553. The complete atlas comprised 33 manuscript nautical charts on parchment, intended for princes, wealthy merchants, and high-ranking officials. Agnese was active between 1534 and 1564, producing at least 71 atlases characterized by high craftsmanship and rich decorations. His maps combined nautical precision and artistic value, including latitudes (but not longitudes) and rhumb lines. This 1553 specimen is preserved at the Museo Correr in Venice and represents the New World with the typical features of Renaissance portolans: rhomboidal lines for navigation, detailed coastlines, elaborate decorations with human figures and vegetation. Agnese loved to incorporate new geographical discoveries into his maps, making this atlas a precious testament to sixteenth-century cartographic knowledge.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on precious Amalfi paper.

It is a paper composed exclusively of cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
