Katsushika Hokusai's "The Ghost of Oiwa" is one of the most famous Japanese prints dedicated to folklore and ghost stories, presented here in a faithful reproduction on fine Amalfi paper. This interpretation of the ghost of Oiwa, suspended over a lantern in the night, brings all the dramatic tension and mysterious charm of Edo-period Japan into your home. Our print maintains the original nuances and conveys the restless and evocative atmosphere that has made "The Ghost of Oiwa" an icon of Japanese art.

Created between 1831 and 1832 for the series Hyaku monogatari, "One Hundred Ghost Stories", the intense blue of the background, obtained with the new Berlin blue pigment, accentuates the nocturnal and funereal atmosphere, evoking for the Edo public the idea of death and the occult world. The inscription on the lantern invites prayer for the woman's soul, transforming the image into a kind of visual ex-voto that combines macabre taste and Buddhist devotion.

Feel the story under your fingers

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today using ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
