"The Laughing Demon" is ideal for those who love Japanese art, manga aesthetics, and fantastic-themed images: a print that immediately becomes a conversation starter, perfect as a gift for art, design, and oriental culture enthusiasts. By purchasing this reproduction on Amalfi paper, you invest in a durable piece, designed to last over time and accompany your collection of art prints.
The work is a woodcut inspired by Katsushika Hokusai's famous print, "Warai Hannya," belonging to the unfinished series Hyaku Monogatari, the "One Hundred Ghost Stories," created in Japan around 1830–1833. The demonic figure combines two monsters from Japanese folklore, the hannya – a woman transformed into a demon by jealousy – and the yamauba, a child-devouring mountain witch, synthesizing in a single mask the dark side of human passions. The blue background, rendered with the new pigment Berlin blue (Prussian blue), accentuates the nocturnal and supernatural character of the scene, typical of ukiyo-e prints dedicated to kaidan, the ghost stories told by candlelight in Edo culture.
