The work
"Head of a Woman" ( La Scapigliata ) by Leonardo da Vinci is a mixed media drawing on wood, made around 1508. The painting depicts the face of a young woman with disheveled, loose hair. The master captures the emotional intensity of the subject with incredible delicacy and expressiveness.
The work is famous for its use of sfumato , Leonardo's technique that allows for the creation of soft transitions between light and shadow, giving a touch of realism and depth. The face is softly modeled, while the hair, left intentionally unfinished, accentuates the contrast between the finished line of the face and the messy outline of the hair.
The drawing is now preserved in the Galleria Nazionale in Parma , Italy.
