The artwork
This work, traditionally attributed to the Bolognese painter Jacopo Ripanda dates back to the first decade of the 16th century. It's one of four large scenes that decorate the hall of the Capitoline Museums, celebrating key episodes in the conflicts between Rome and Carthage.
The fresco depicts Hannibal, the famous Carthaginian leader, leading his war elephants. The depiction is somewhat fantastical, not aiming for rigorous historical accuracy, but rather evoking the myth and impact of Hannibal on Roman history. Despite its stylistic simplicity, the work is valuable because it demonstrates how the figure of Hannibal has continued to inspire artists throughout the centuries, merging with history to create powerful visual narratives.
