The portrait of Diana Cecil, Countess of Oxford, is an oil on canvas painted by Sir Anthony van Dyck in 1638, during his English period at the court of Charles I. The work, now in the Prado Museum, measures 107 x 86 cm and belongs to the full Baroque maturity of the Flemish painter, when Van Dyck was the portraitist of choice for the British aristocracy. The figure, enveloped in a dark gown adorned with jewels and pearls, emerges with great elegance from the warm, rocky background, while her gaze and composed posture emphasize the countess's aristocratic rank.
The context is that of the English high nobility of the 1640s, who entrusted Van Dyck with the task of capturing an idealized image of their status shortly before the outbreak of the civil war. Conceived as an official portrait, the painting combines psychological observation with social celebration: the jewels, the black velvet, the landscape behind her, and the delicate flower between her fingers allude to the sitter's wealth, dignity, and virtue. In this way, Van Dyck transforms Diana Cecil into an icon of aristocratic grace, placing her within the international language of Baroque court portraiture.
