The map takes up the descriptions from Julius Caesar's Commentarii with precise indications of the parts of all of Gaul with the populations and the main geographical and topographical parts. A real gem.
The Commentarii, also called Commentarius in the singular, are a set of writings attributed to Gaius Julius Caesar, a general and politician well known by scholars. These works can be described as historical and ethnographic chronicles that document the various battles conducted by Caesar against the peoples he conquered, such as the Africans and the Gauls. Furthermore, they have an educational and descriptive purpose, addressing the habits and customs of these populations. The most notable work in this collection is De bello Gallico (The Gallic War), which tells of Caesar's military campaigns in Gaul. Another important work is De bello civili (The Civil War), which focuses on Caesar's war against Pompey the Great.
These texts are included in the Corpus Caesarianum, a comprehensive collection of Caesar's works edited by Aulus Hirtius, Caesar's friend and lieutenant. Furthermore, the Corpus Caesarianum also includes other titles dealing with minor campaigns conducted by Caesar, such as Anticato, Bellum Africum, Bellum Alexandrinum and Bellum Hispaniense.
