This portrait is an oil on canvas painted by Anthony van Dyck around 1638. The figure, identified as Elizabeth Brydges (or Barnham), Countess of Castlehaven, is depicted in half-bust, with her torso slightly turned and her right hand resting on her chest, draped in a red gown and a large green fabric that seems to swell as if moved by an internal wind within the scene. This fluid and voluminous drapery, rendered with soft and brilliant touches, becomes almost as prominent as the face, transforming the garment into an expressive device that amplifies the model's presence and creates a refined play of chromatic contrasts between red, green, and a neutral brown background.

The work belongs to Van Dyck's late English period, when the painter, in the service of Charles I, defined a new model of aristocratic portraiture, marked by elegance, grace, and subtle idealization. The portrait fully meets the celebratory needs of the high court nobility: the direct gaze, the composed yet relaxed pose, and the preciousness of the fabrics communicate rank and decorum, while the relative sobriety of the setting focuses attention on the silent psychology of the figure and the almost theatrical effect of the drapery. In this context, Van Dyck codified a language that would become a model for much of 17th-century European portraiture, merging observation from life, worldly sophistication, and Baroque monumentality.
