The artwork
This work depicts the Battle of Cannae, which took place on August 2, 216 BC in Apulia. It was the decisive battle of the Second Punic War, where the Carthaginian Hannibal resoundingly defeated the numerically superior Roman army.
The Romans, led by the consuls Varro and Aemilius Paullus, fielded between 50,000 and 80,000 men. Hannibal, with approximately 50,000 infantry and cavalry, employed a brilliant pincer movement: he forced his infantry center back, drawing the Romans into a pocket, while his cavalry routed the enemy's cavalry and attacked the Romans from behind, completing the encirclement.
The consequences were disastrous for Rome: there were between 50,000 and 70,000 dead, including many senators. Despite the severe defeat and the shift of some Italian cities to Hannibal's side, Rome demonstrated extraordinary resilience, adopting tactics of attrition and rebuilding its forces, which ultimately led to the final victory at Zama and the end of the war. Cannae remains a historic example of a tactical masterpiece and of a nation's ability to recover even from the worst defeats.
