The work
The engraving of the Capitoline Hill in Rome by Hieronymus Cock (1544-1545) depicts the Piazza del Campidoglio in the period in which Michelangelo was planning its renovation. The work offers a perspective view of the Capitoline Hill, highlighting the Palazzo Senatorio, the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, part of Michelangelo's project. In the center of the square the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius is visible. The engraving captures the lively atmosphere of the square with human figures and precise architectural details. This work not only documents the state of the Capitoline Hill in the 16th century, but also reflects the importance of the place as the political and cultural center of Rome. Cock's engravings helped spread knowledge of Italian architecture in Northern Europe, influencing the artistic sensibility of the time and providing valuable testimony to the urban transformations of Renaissance Rome .
