The artwork
This work depicts the Battle of Cynoscephalae, fought in 197 BC in Thessaly, Greece. It was the decisive battle of the Second Macedonian War between the Roman Republic (led by Titus Quinctius Flamininus) and the Kingdom of Macedon (under Philip V).
Both armies were similar in size, but the hilly terrain and fog favored the Roman army. Although the Macedonian phalanx initially pushed the Romans, its rigidity became a weakness on the uneven terrain. The flexibility of the Roman legion was decisive: a Roman unit outflanked the phalanx and attacked it from behind, disorganizing it and leading to a crushing Roman victory.
This battle marked the decline of the Macedonian phalanx and the emergence of the Roman legion as a superior military formation. The defeat forced Philip V to a punitive peace and paved the way for the future Roman hegemony over Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, consolidating Rome's power.
