The artwork
Lorenzo A. Castro's painting "Battle of Actium" (1672) depicts the historic naval battle of September 2, 31 BC, which ended the Roman Civil Wars.
In the battle Octavian (the future Augustus) with his admiral Agrippa fought against Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII. The conflict arose from the tensions between Octavian, who dominated the West, and Antony, who had ties to Cleopatra's Egypt.
Octavian's forces, despite his smaller ships, prevailed thanks to their agility and coordination. Cleopatra's sudden escape, followed by Antony, led to the defeat of their troops.
Castro's painting, typical of the Baroque period, emphasizes the drama and grandeur of the battle. The victory at Actium was a crucial turning point, marking the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Principate, with Octavian as its sole leader.
