The work
Leonardo da Vinci's "Allegory of the Boat, the Wolf and the Eagle", completed around 1516, is a chalk drawing that contains rich historical symbolism. Art historians interpret the work as a reference to the meeting between Pope LeoIn the design, the wolf represents the Pope or the Roman Catholic Church, while the crowned eagle sitting on a globe symbolizes the French monarch. This image could also represent the power of the German emperor at the time. The work is seen as a very early example of a political cartoon, with a clear reference to political satire, a theme rarely explored by Leonardo in other works.
Technically, the drawing shows excellent mastery of perspective and the depiction of a moving scene. The eagle is the most regal and powerful figure, while the wolf, possibly symbolizing the church, is depicted in a negative way and relegated to the background. This work stands out in Leonardo's artistic period for its "pure" nature, without a particular scientific focus, but with a powerful and satirical political message.
