Historical Family Tree of the Italian Peoples

The map is an exceptional work entitled “Grand' Albero Genealogico Storico Dei Popoli Italiani”, created by Pietro Fiocchi in Milan in 1827. This beautifully hand-coloured map depicts a historical family tree of the Italian peoples, tracing the cultural and historical origins of the modern inhabitants of Italy.

The map's timeline begins with the “Aborigines or first inhabitants of Italy”, dating back to before 3250 BC, and unfolds through the centuries until it converges into a great melting pot from which the modern peoples emerge. These include, among others, the peoples of Malta, Naples, San Marino, the Papal States, the Duchy of Lucca, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Modena, the Duchy of Parma, the Kingdom of Lombardy and the State of Sardinia, as well as the Republics of Venice and Genoa.

The map ends at the beginning of the 19th century, providing a broad overview of the different cultural and historical influences that contributed to the formation of the modern Italian peoples.
