The theme of water lilies, which Claude Monet began to explore at the end of the 19th century, represents one of the most iconic cycles of his artistic production. "White Water Lilies" is part of this vast corpus of works, dedicated to the water lily pond that the painter himself had set up in his garden in Giverny, Normandy.
Monet moved to Giverny in 1883 and, as time went by, his interest became increasingly focused on the representation of the surrounding nature, in particular the play of light and reflections on the water of his pond. Water lilies became an almost obsessive subject, studied in every variation of light, time of day and atmospheric condition.
This type of pictorial investigation, which shifts the focus from a broader landscape to an intimate and thoughtful fragment of nature, anticipates subsequent artistic trends and consolidates Monet's position as a central figure of Impressionism, before moving further towards more abstract works in his later series.
