The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of Warwick Castle, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the large green lawn in front of the castle walls, peopled with scenes of everyday life. Further back is the castle, with its high crenellated walls and its gateway. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon, and the day is fine. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1752. Canaletto painted three variants of this picture.
The painting is on display at the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.
