The artwork
An original and very fine photograph depicting St Jerome Reading in the Wilderness, painted by Giovanni Bellini.
St Jerome Reading in the Wilderness is an oil painting on panel (49 x 39 cm (19.3 x 15.4 in)) by Giovanni Bellini, made in 1505 and held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
The work repeats an almost identical composition of around 1480, the Contini Bonacossi St Jerome now in the Uffizi. The saint is depicted in the wilderness, dressed in a hermit's poor rags, absorbed in reading, an allusion to his scholarly work on the translation of the Vulgate.
