The artwork
An admirable view of the port of Messina with a detail of elegant merchants bargaining over goods, made by Jakob Philipp Hackert. The ships are moored at the quay; the merchants in their fine clothes stand out, painted by Hackert in detail. The goods can be seen, wooden planks painted on the quay, waiting for the deal to be settled. On the shore some sailors are loading the goods, while in the background boats are manoeuvring inside the dock.
The painting is on display at the Royal Palace of Caserta.
