An original and luminous 18th-century view of the magnificent Rialto Bridge looking south, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. Prominent is the great covered single-span bridge with its shops. In the foreground a boat is moored at the quay, with goods being unloaded. On the Grand Canal there are other small boats; on the opposite side the Venetian palaces stand out, side by side. The sky is clear, but with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this painting.
